It took an elegantly simple approach: By working through professional organizations representing medical specialties, Choosing Wisely asked doctors to identify “Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question.” ’ (see article below)

Seniors Finance and Pension Matters

However, “contrary to some dire predictions, population aging will not fuel a demographically-induced selloff in Canadian real estate,” Ms. Warren predicts. “Today’s seniors are healthier, wealthier and living longer than prior generations. They are increasingly likely to own their own home and to live in their homes for longer.”

Home ownership rates don’t begin to decline until after age 75, and “even then, the home ownership rate of Canadians 75+, at close to 70 per cent, is roughly the same as for those aged 35-44,”

“The research consistently tells us that as we get older, we get happier. . . . And yet, the vast majority – 89 per cent of people – hold some negative stereotype about aging,” said Amy D’Aprix, a gerontologist from Toronto. “If we can blow these myths out of the water, it will change everything.”

Seniors General Matters

“Many older people don’t like to drive far from their homes, they like to stay in their comfort zone,” said lead author Jennifer Davis, Ph.D., of the department of psychiatry at Rhode Island Hospital. “They don’t drive many miles, and they often avoid driving at night. Taking them out of that comfort zone and placing them in an environment of formal test-taking – one which carries with it potentially life-altering consequences (loss of their driver’s license) – may lead to significant anxiety, which in itself could impair their driving abilities.”

Seniors General Matters

The government simply cannot put its fiscal house in order without addressing Medicare’s ballooning expenses. And there are only three ways to do so: reduce the cost of coverage, cover fewer people or collect more money. Negotiators are considering all of the above, including increasing competition among providers, raising the minimum eligibility age from 65 to 66 or 67, boosting premiums for high-income seniors and hiking the Medicare portion of the payroll tax, which is already set to rise next year by 0.9 percentage points for wealthier households. Seniors Finance and Pension Matters

It’s a reflection of the country’s changing demographics. About a quarter of a million business owners, or a fifth of businesses with employees, are now aged 55 and over. That number that has climbed 4 per cent a year over the past decade, more than double the rate in the 1990s. By the end of the decade, almost 350,000 business owners will be over the age of 55 — raising questions about who will take over thousands of Canadian businesses once current entrepreneurs retire”. Seniors Health

“It sounds like heresy, but recent evidence challenges the long-held belief that the annual physical is beneficial for healthy adults. Researchers at the Nordic Cochrane Center in Copenhagen wrote that although a regular check-up with multiple screening tests might seem to offer the advantage of catching problems like heart disease and cancer early, their review of studies involving some 180,000 adults actually found no benefit. People who had annual check-ups were no less likely to be admitted to the hospital, become disabled or miss work than those who did not have regular physicals. Even more surprising, they were no less likely to die from heart disease, cancer or any other illness.

In fact, subjecting healthy adults to this yearly battery of tests may do more harm than good. The authors write, “One possible harm from health checks is the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that were not destined to cause symptoms or death. Their diagnosis will, therefore, be superfluous and carry the risk of unnecessary treatment.” (See article below)
