It took an elegantly simple approach: By working through professional organizations representing medical specialties, Choosing Wisely asked doctors to identify “Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question.” ’ (see article below)

Seniors Finance and Pension Matters

However, “contrary to some dire predictions, population aging will not fuel a demographically-induced selloff in Canadian real estate,” Ms. Warren predicts. “Today’s seniors are healthier, wealthier and living longer than prior generations. They are increasingly likely to own their own home and to live in their homes for longer.”

Home ownership rates don’t begin to decline until after age 75, and “even then, the home ownership rate of Canadians 75+, at close to 70 per cent, is roughly the same as for those aged 35-44,”

“The research consistently tells us that as we get older, we get happier. . . . And yet, the vast majority – 89 per cent of people – hold some negative stereotype about aging,” said Amy D’Aprix, a gerontologist from Toronto. “If we can blow these myths out of the water, it will change everything.”

Seniors General Matters

“Many older people don’t like to drive far from their homes, they like to stay in their comfort zone,” said lead author Jennifer Davis, Ph.D., of the department of psychiatry at Rhode Island Hospital. “They don’t drive many miles, and they often avoid driving at night. Taking them out of that comfort zone and placing them in an environment of formal test-taking – one which carries with it potentially life-altering consequences (loss of their driver’s license) – may lead to significant anxiety, which in itself could impair their driving abilities.”

Seniors General Matters

The government simply cannot put its fiscal house in order without addressing Medicare’s ballooning expenses. And there are only three ways to do so: reduce the cost of coverage, cover fewer people or collect more money. Negotiators are considering all of the above, including increasing competition among providers, raising the minimum eligibility age from 65 to 66 or 67, boosting premiums for high-income seniors and hiking the Medicare portion of the payroll tax, which is already set to rise next year by 0.9 percentage points for wealthier households. Seniors Finance and Pension Matters

It’s a reflection of the country’s changing demographics. About a quarter of a million business owners, or a fifth of businesses with employees, are now aged 55 and over. That number that has climbed 4 per cent a year over the past decade, more than double the rate in the 1990s. By the end of the decade, almost 350,000 business owners will be over the age of 55 — raising questions about who will take over thousands of Canadian businesses once current entrepreneurs retire”. Seniors Health

“It sounds like heresy, but recent evidence challenges the long-held belief that the annual physical is beneficial for healthy adults. Researchers at the Nordic Cochrane Center in Copenhagen wrote that although a regular check-up with multiple screening tests might seem to offer the advantage of catching problems like heart disease and cancer early, their review of studies involving some 180,000 adults actually found no benefit. People who had annual check-ups were no less likely to be admitted to the hospital, become disabled or miss work than those who did not have regular physicals. Even more surprising, they were no less likely to die from heart disease, cancer or any other illness.

In fact, subjecting healthy adults to this yearly battery of tests may do more harm than good. The authors write, “One possible harm from health checks is the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that were not destined to cause symptoms or death. Their diagnosis will, therefore, be superfluous and carry the risk of unnecessary treatment.” (See article below)

Seniors Finance and Pension Matters

“Bank of Montreal is warning Boomers not to count on that nest egg, while other observers suggest that even if prices don’t plunge, big increases in property values are a thing of the past.

“They shouldn’t be relying on their homes because there are risks,” says Marlena Pospiech, a retirement strategist at the BMO Retirement Institute.

The bank suggests the following risky scenario: As Canada’s population ages, more Boomers will be retiring and selling their homes, putting downward pressure on prices.” (see article below)

Seniors General Matters

“It’s institutional bullying: Let’s get rid of our older, higher-paid workers so we can reduce our payroll and hire someone younger and cheaper,” says Gary Namie, a social psychologist and director of the WBI.

As one of North America’s foremost authorities on the subject, Namie says older employees are “unequivocally” more likely to be targeted – and also to be more hurt when it occurs, as that generation has greater presumptions of fairness.(see article below)

“Among a large cohort of elderly residents of Ontario, the risk of a hip fracture during the first 45 days after initiating antihypertensive treatment rose by 43% (incidence rate ratio 1.43, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.72), according to Debra Butt, MD, of the University of Toronto.

For those starting ACE inhibitors, the risk increased by 53% (IRR 1.53, 95% CI 1.12 to 2.10), she reported at the annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research”. (see article below)

Seniors Finance and Pension Matters

“Having skipped its pension contributions for many years, Chicago is supposed to start tripling them in another year under state law. But the school district has drained its reserves. And it cannot easily turn to the local taxpayers because of a cap on property taxes. Borrowing the money would be difficult and expensive as well, because of a credit downgrade this summer. One of the few remaining choices would be to make deep cuts in other services’. (See article below)

Seniors General Matters

“Advance directives have become increasingly used to guide patients and family members. The underlying assumption is that a great deal of the stress and complexities of making decisions about therapy will be solved if the patient specifies his or her preferences in advance. But considerable research has highlighted that choices about treatment frequently change, and advance directives often fail to accurately forecast what a patient will want when actually experiencing a severe illness”. Seniors and flying – from Dennis Miller……

Why Seniors Should Not Fly

I hate flying. Since I retired ten years ago, I drive almost everywhere I can to avoid the airport hassles.

I had to make a cross-country trip, so I reluctantly booked my ticket, packed, and went to the airport. Having read horror stories about the TSA, I was more than a bit nervous.

I went to check my luggage, and the lady said my bag weighed too much so I had to pay an additional fee. I reached in my pocket and got my wallet out to begrudgingly pay when the clerk said: “Strip down, facing me.”

Making a mental note to complain to my Congressman about Homeland Security running amok, I did just as she had instructed.

When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card.

TSA security was a breeze after that, although I’m sure I’m on some list.

They need to make their

Seniors General Matters

“Of course, there is no ‘silver bullet’ that will end the financial abuse of America’s seniors. Putting a major dent in the problem will require new and innovative collaborative efforts by many different experts and organizations, both public and private. Our survey makes it clear that those efforts need to take root all across America and then link up with other groups and their programs in order to reduce the attack on the investment and life savings of older Americans.”

Seniors Health

“If a patient has a medical problem, a call to the medical office is made to see the doctor. However, before the appointment is made, both the patient and office checks to ensure the visit will be covered by insurance. If not, a call to a different medical office is made until one that participates with the patient’s insurance is found. However, if the patient decides to see a physician who does not participate with his health insurance company, he will be responsible for the entire bill (the office visit will not be covered by insurance)”.

From Dr. Art Hister’s Blog:

An important note for baby boomers

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 09:00 AM PDT

“If your eyesight is going, and hey! Is there a boomer alive who still has the vision he/she had just a few years ago, here’s an important reason to get your vision corrected as much as possible as soon as possible.

According to a new study published online in the journal, Ophthalmology, and this is really just simple common sense,  people whose vision has gone downhill in both eyes are less physically active than people whose vision has not deteriorated.

And you know the bottom line: very few of us need yet another reason not to be physical active”.
